Authors note

I conceived of Lester's Turn while contemplating "Wouldn’t Stargate be a lot better if the gate was operated by a private enterprise and the excursions were led by and for the self-actualization of a socially incompetent, but fearless mass murderer with a tiny little heart of gold?"

Editor's introduction

The Hole is the introduction to a series.

AD 2045 – Universally loathed and imprisoned for life, Lester Linz is a comfortable man with an eye on the future.

Lester loves to watch TV and sometimes he tunes in channels no one else can. He finds a patron, a technology magnate whose dominance in her field is assured as long as Lester remains her conduit to this ethereal advanced information. In exchange, she uses her resources to satisfy his wishes and whims.

Arranging a pardon is a good start. But when she discovers a time machine, hidden until Lester provided the tools to detect it, he develops a sudden interest in travel.

Not yet able to program the machine, Lester sets off, destination unknown, with a Thai spook as his spectacularly over-qualified minder. Song’s job is to bring Lester back alive – no mean feat, since his charge insists upon swashbuckling, dueling and partying his way through violent pasts.

Meanwhile, Lester’s parole officer is convinced there is more to his original crime than meets the eye. He risks his reputation, and possibly his life, poking his nose into the business of the world’s most powerful person. If he can stay one step ahead of her efforts to discredit or dispose of him, he might just be the only outsider to discover The Hole.

Lester Turn eBook Vic Nighthorse

After I read the book, I thought it was worth maybe 3 stars, but the book grew on me, prompting a second reading and I upped it to 4 stars.
In the first of what he promises will be a series of novels, Vic Nighthorse introduces the hapless and mysterious anti-hero, Lester Linz. Twenty years into a life sentence for a mass murder at a lawyer convention, Linz apparently hears voices with a novel twist. While in jail, he parlays the content of his imaginary communications into a lucrative deal with an industrial magnate who uses the information to make astounding technological leaps, including the discovery of a mysterious time machine hidden in plain sight in a historic part of the world. The magnate's reward for Linz's help is a presidential pardon, and Linz sets out to lead a small, but possibly growing group of explorers into the world of time travel. No-one knows when, where, or why. The first novel takes us back in time. First into Persia during Muhammed's lifetime and then into revolutionary France. Nighthorse weaves a fascinating narrative, both futuristic and historical, intertwined with a side-story of his parole officer's hunt for the motives behind Linz's pardon and an explanation for the mysteries arising from his new life. It made it hard to put the book down at times.
If there was a disappointment in the book, it was the tantalizing, yet very subtle hints at a deeper storyline which didn't seem to come to fruition in this first narrative of what promises to be a series. Then again, maybe that's what is making look forward to the book.

Lester Turn eBook Vic Nighthorse Reviews

The Hole starts out as a normal science fiction story, with the discovery of "The Hole" by Karen Wagner, owner of some very high-tech companies and "the world's most powerful woman" (or human). Wagner decides to send convicted murderer Lester Linz through the hole with two others. Why? Unclear. Linz has shown signs of being able to predict the future, but how this would help in his travels into the past is not explained. The author sent me a copy of his book and asked me to review it.

After an initial sortie, Linz and company end up in 1800s France, about the time of the French Revolution. Unlike in most time travel stories, they have no qualms about trying to change timelines. The bulk of the story is about their time in France, where they meet and interact with numerous historical figures, introducing significant future technology deliberately.

I enjoyed the story as far as it went, but started to get annoyed when it all seemed so pointless. I had no idea why these people were there and what their motivations were. Lester is a fascinating character, but the big mystery about the voices that tell him things was just dropped. And, after the beginning, Wagner effectively disappears from the story. I think this book could have been so much more - the writing style is fine, the characters and situations are interesting, but I desperately wanted to see a developed plot, and it just wasn't there.
I found the historical and time-travel elements of this book very compelling, though I got a little lost in some of the technology jargon. I wish the main character's motives and background had been more developed, but I guess the author is saving that for the next installment.
I liked this book very much! Though I am not usually a sci fi fan, the interesting characters quickly drew me in. I had a little trouble understanding all the technological terminology at first, but soon I could understand it through the context itself. I very much enjoyed the historical time traveling element and how the characters adjusted to their surroundings. The plot is quite unique and compelling in that regard. I was so interested to see what would happen ultimately to Lester, Song and Sam, that I finished the last third of the book in one sitting!
I just finished the book and enjoyed it very much.

The story was well written, good prose, excellent flow and I really enjoyed the technology. The character interaction was complicated, but consistent. It was interesting in that it forced me to think and follow (and reread) the character interaction more closely than I am used to.

This was an excellent story and hope there is another soon.
